31 Days To Clutter Free / Day 21 – Computers & Cell Phones

Happy Friday and Day 21!

31 Day Button-3

You know what that means?  More time during the weekend to go clutter free!  So get ready!  For today, I have a couple of things to share.  First, I have not completed the laundry room but I have made progress.

I still have cupboard #2 to finish, but I’m confident that will happen today.

The other task I need to accomplish (and I’m hoping you join me) is doing a clean sweep of my phone and computer.  I tend to take the easy route sometimes and transfer everything to my computer desk top instead of making a nice folder.  I also have needless pics on my phone.  You see, clutter is everywhere!

31 Days To Clutter Free / Day 20 – Confessions + More Organizing Ideas

Happy Day 20 of…

31 Day Button-3

I gave you a commitment yesterday.  I told you I was going to de-clutter my laundry room today.  Confession time –  It is hard and challenging to do a daily clutter task after a 8-9 hour work day and a 2 hour commute.  I made a dent in the room and plan on continuing tomorrow night.

For today’s post I thought I would share some random and very cool organizing ideas from Pinterest.  Enjoy!

Flip Flop Hangers…I could seriously take up a chunk of my closet.  Maybe my Rubbermaid tote in the garage is the perfect place for them, all of them

Do you have an  extra paper towel holder you were planning on getting rid of?  With Christmas commin I’m just sayin it might come in handy

31 Days To Clutter Free / Day 19 – Laundry Room

Happy Day 19 Everyone.  If your along with me in the 31 days to clutter free we’ve accomplished much!

31 Day Button-3

I made it through the 3 bathrooms.   Today after work I will be going through the laundry room.  That will be both a challenge and an opportunity.  It’s where all the cleaners are stored.  We also normally enter our house through the garage so I need to find a way for it to not be a dumping ground.  If you’re going through your laundry room today think about how much time you spend in there.  I’m not yet sure what I’ll do yet, but I’m taking my inspiration from the following pics brought to you by Pinterest.

Use a shower caddy under the sink for cleaning products.

.Shower caddy in laundry for supplies

A munch prettier way to house laundry soap.

If I scoop laundry detergent from a glass jar does it make it more fun to fold the clothes?

Tips:

I found a glass jar, put the recipe on it and will keep it in my laundry cabinet. That way I always have the recipe and a container to shake it in close at hand. I soaked a few items and was very impressed with how well it worked. Homemade OxyClean: 1 cup water, 1/2 cup peroxide, 1/2 cup baking soda. Mix together and soak laundry in it for 20 minutes to overnight and then wash as usual. Or you can just skip the water and pour the peroxide and baking soda directly into the wash with your laundry soap and wash as usual.  Clean your washing machine. Mine WAS disgusting until I tried this. Easy

I want mine to look like these…

31 Days To Clutter Free / Day 18 – How To Hide Kept Clutter

Woot Woot!  Day 18 and let me just say this challenge has really made my brain stay on overdrive and me into gear.  By sharing with you I am motivating myself to really clean, straighten, organize and de-clutter and all before the holiday season.  Excellent!

31 Day Button-3

I’ve mentioned before that realistically we will always have some clutter.  Rephrase:  I am real enough with myself to know I will always have a little bit of clutter.  That said, it can be organized and stored effectively so not to make my hubby to crazy.  I walked through my house thinking about this yesterday and took a couple of pics of what I use to do this.  Apologies, the pics aren’t the greatest.  I was using my phone and the lighting was poor.  I’ve somehow locked my camera up and need to fix it.

I will always have some magazines and we will always lay around in the family room.  That’s what it’s for.  I have two metal cubes that act as my coffee table and I hide blankets, pillows and magazines in them.

When my mom passed away I brought her hope chest home and it’s full of memories, hers and mine.  I know right where everything is and  I can go “visit”  anytime.

I’ve stacked these large decorative boxes and they act as a side table in my loft.  What you can’t see is the backside where I’ve labeled them.  There’s one for me, and one for each of my brothers.  When my parents and Aunt passed away I became the recipient of all the photos.  If I’m watching TV in the loft I’ll sort through photos at the same time and put them in the appropriate box.  Doing it this way seems to be working.

There ya have it.  How do you store the clutter that you just can’t seem to get rid of?

31 Days To Clutter Free / Day 17 – Clutter Collections

Here we are…Monday morning and we’re at Day 17.  YAY!!!!

31 Day Button-3

Confession.  I have 3 bathrooms and I only got through one so I will be working on the other two this week;  15 minutes here, 15 minutes there.  Remember, that’s okay as some progress is better then none.

No other tasks for today other then think about those collections you have and ask yourself do you truly love them enough to keep them.  And PLEASE do not feel guilty if the answer is no.  We change our likes over the years and also inherit items sometimes that we would never have bought ourselves.

I’m struggling with some of this right now.  My suggestion is in these type scenarios pack it up , put it away and give yourself permission to not think about for awhile.  I mean 3 months or so or maybe until spring clean time.  If you haven’t missed it you’ll know what to do.

31 Days To Clutter Free / Day 16 – Under the Bathroom Sinks + Day 15 Linen Closet Recap

Day 16!  Happy Sunday All!

31 Day Button-3

A quick recap for you on my Saturday activities and tasks I had planned to complete.  I had lunch as planned with my nieces and sis-in law (bummer, one was sick).  Stopped at Michaels (mistake) and got home too late to tape and paint.  I’m moving that to next weekend and did not beat myself up for it.

It’s nice this clutter free series keeps me honest with all of you.  Thank you.  Yep, that’s what I said at 10:00 last night when I was cleaning out the linen closet (see yesterdays post).  Here’s some before and after pics.  It looks so much better.  You see that big space on one shelf?  That’s where I threw all the towels out and will buy new this week.  I also did not put back a bunch of containers with craft items in them.  Later this week I’ll share some storage ideas for those kind of items.  Ta da da!…here are the before and after, and yes I’m patting myself on the back ’cause I’m quite proud of myself.  :-)

The amazing thing is I had all the containers and covering the cardboard boxes with contact paper was a bonus!

Moving on to tasks I want to complete today. I’m taking on under the bathroom sinks.  This will be interesting…HA!!!  One of those things I need to go through is all my make-up.  I searched and found the attached to help me; great information on the shelf life for blush, mascara, etc.  Join me, won’t you?

31 Days To Clutter Free / Day 15 – Linen Closet

Yipee!!!  Day 15 of my 31 Days to Clutter Free series.  Hi All! Happy Saturday!

31 Day Button-3There’s lot’s going on today.  I’m excited to have lunch with my nieces and sis-in-laws.  We’ve actually, in all these years,  never been out together, just the 5 of us.  I’m always ready to start new traditions so hopefully this will be the beginning of many lunches and get-togethers with my favorite girly-girls.

I also have plans to paint my family room and kitchen tomorrow so I’d like to get all the prep work done today.

What’s this got to do with clutter free?  Well, sometimes ya just gotta schedule 30 minutes here and there to do a task.  That’s how long it will probably take me to put my linen closet in order.  It’s a mess right now.  I’ll share before and after pics tomorrow.  My plan of attack today is:

  1. Pull everything out and assess.  Example and don’t laugh…I still have towels that we got for wedding shower presents 30 years ago and they have never been used and I am keeping them why?
  2. Sort in the following categories: Keep and Put Back in the Linen closet, Keep and Put Somewhere Else, Donate, Garbage, Make Rags
  3. Assess if I need any containers, baskets, etc.  Do I have any of this in the pile I’ve already taken to the garage during my previous 14 days of de-cluttering.  Can I reuse?  Is it time to make a trip to the dollar store for cheap cute containers?
  4. Wipe of the shelves
  5. Put everything back
  6. Label

31 Days To Clutter Free / Day 14 – Some Additional Donation Places I Heart

Happy Friday and Woot Woot!!!  We are at the half way point of the 31 Day Challenge to go Clutter Free.  Day 14, can you believe it.  To look at all posts so far just click into my sidebar.

31 Day Button-3

I shared recycle and donation information on Day 7 .  I wanted to add to this list and share with you today some additional places that are worth taking the time to donate to.  And yes, all three have a story behind them.

The Lions Club – a worldwide organization with groups in every city.  These individuals come together to volunteer their time in their communities to make a difference.  Their influence is positive to their surroundings.  My dad was a member of the Lions Club from the day he retired from his job to the day he died, 23 years.  He ran the Eye Bank for his group and what that meant is he collected used eye glasses , and using aised funds, had the proper prescriptions put in glass frames , giving them to those that could not afford to purchase a pair.  A very worthy cause.  In my quest these past two weeks to de-clutter I found 6 pairs of glasses and I know where I am taking them.  Contact the Lions Club in your area today and do the same.

Battered Women’s Shelter – I used to travel a lot for work and would bring home the shampoos, conditioners and lotions that were left in my hotel room.  I just tossed them into ziplock bags and threw them in the bottom of my linen closet.  Several years ago I got my work group engaged.  I went to Michaels and bought 100 small brown bags.  Everyone brought in their extra samples.  One of my co-workers brought in toothbrushes and toothpaste.  Another had an over abundance of stickers, pens, writing pads.  We filled 70 bags with all of the items that we just had laying around.  In order to contact a Battered women’s shelter you have to call the police as they need to run a background check on you first.  Remember these folks at the shelters, adults and children have been pulled or ran from their homes because they were being abused.  In many cases they have left with nothing.  So a bag with soap, lotion, shampoo and all the rest of the items, the smallest of items to us, can mean so much to someone else.  I was able to make contact and drop off those 70 bags and what a good feeling it was.

Hospitals and Police Stations – Ever wonder what to do with all those Beanie Babies you madly collected or the stuffed animals you won at the local fair.  Having them cleaned and taking them to a hospital or police station might benefit a child that needs to hold on to something for comfort.   Books are very helpful too.

So take a look at your clutter and really ask yourself will it benefit someone else?

31 Days To Clutter Free / Day 13 – Organized Clutter

Happy Day 13 of 31 Days To Clutter Free.

31 Day Button-3

I’m slowly getting through things, how about you? I’ve spent some time going through my favorite collection – craft stuff.  I call it organized clutter.  I won’t tell you what my hubby calls it. :-)

I think we are all going to always going to have some clutter.  Just make sure it’s organized and then it will look planned.  Try and keep it confined and stick to the plan to keep it from spreading.  Here’s some ways I put my craft stuff in order.

My hubby has dubbed my spare room “the woman cave”.  It has all my favorite things, all my clutter, in organized fashion.

Cellophane and wrapping paper for my candy bouquets housed in an empty garbage can.

31 Days To Clutter Free / Day 12 – Organizing by Notebook

Welcome to Day 12 of the 31 Day Challenge.  Time is just zooming by.  I’m feeling a bit less cluttered, how about you?  I’ve gotten rid of a stack of magazines, taken a bag of clothes to the Goodwill and shredded a grocery bag’s worth of documents.  I’ve still got tons to do.  It never goes fast enough.  Something called LIFE gets in the way but remember,  one day at a time, a little each day is okay.

Today I wanted to provide a few thoughts on what to do with extra papers that always seem to be there.  A story for you…  last night hubby and I were sitting in the family room.  Staring at our current window treatments, I said out loud, “I wonder what wood slatted blinds would look like.  I already have the measurements”.  My hubby replied, “you don’t have the measurements”.  “Yes I do” said I.  “Prove it” he said.  So….I walked into  the den and pulled a large notebook off the shelf.  The notebook was divided by room name (bedroom, bath, windows, etc) And there at the window tab I found the blind or curtain measurements for every window, done by a professional, ten years ago.  My book also contained fabric swatches for furniture and curtains, paint colors, rug colors, pictures of rooms, room dimensions, tile samples and on and on.  The point is all of this stuff if just laying around the  house or stacked in a corner could be perceived as clutter.  Instead, it is organized information and it’s great to have when shopping!

Other notebooks I currently have:

  • I keep warranties and manuals etc. for items in notebooks associated with the area and type.  Examples: I have a notebook in the laundry room with washer, dryer, vacuum cleaner, iron information.  A notebook in the garage for the lawn mower, leaf blower, lawn furniture.  Kitchen: dishwasher, refrigerator, electric fry pan, etc.  This really helps us in the long run and is something you might find useful.
  • Magazine articles – I have a couple books divided into sections and actually file them.  Then I go through them once a month
  • Addresses, menus, business card – I have one notebook on a kitchen shelf that I put all that information.  I created the address forms and section headers myself and would be happy to share.

Have a good day.  TTYL,
