Spare Room Project – Bulletin Board + Cost Breakdown

I’m so glad to have the spare room done.  As I mentioned yesterday I really wanted a room where I could craft and be inspired or take a quiet moment to read or maybe a little catnap :-).  It also had to be a place where if needed, someone could sleep. I’ve just been walking in there and standing and grinning.  It’s a good feeling to have a vision and then accomplish it.

I wanted to give ya the scoop on one of the projects that you saw in the room.  Saturday night puppy Divot woke me up at 1:30 a.m.  Then I couldn’t go back to sleep.  After I tossed and turned, hate that by the way, I decided I would just decorate an old bulletin board.  I know! 1:30 in the morning and I’m doing what?

I guarantee you could do this and it doesn’t have to be the middle of the night.  I also will say right up front this is not the fanciest job and I’m sure I didn’t do it the way you’re supposed to.  But at 1:30 in the morning anything looks good and then I was too tired to change it and now its kind of grown on me.

What you need: bulletin board, scrapbook paper, ribbon, pushpins. Fit the paper onto the board.  I didn’t even cut it. Then take your ribbon and outline the 4 sides and then start laying the ribbon diagonally, creating crisscrosses. I ran out of turquoise ribbon so I just used a different color. Use pushpins to hold ribbon in place.

Spare Room Project – Finally Complete!

Hi all!  I’m so excited to share that the spare room project, aka craft/guest/reading /my room is finally complete.  Well, complete for now.  There’s still a few things I’d like to do, but they can wait.

When I began this project in early September I gave myself some guiding rules. For full post, (read here).  See below how I did.

  1. Use items already in my house; Move, repurpose furniture, be creative. Yes
  2. It has to provide bedding where at least one person could sleep. Yes
  3. Must be functional. I need to comfortably be able to craft and read. Yes
  4. Divot needs to have a place to sit by the window and look outside. Yes
  5. Get out of my green comfort zone. Yes
  6. Spend minimal dollars. Yes

I moved a love seat/sofa bed and ottoman into the room from our loft.  Since it’s a deep blue/green color that helped me decide my colors which came from my hubby’s Tommy Bahama shirt.

Shirt on Door Okay, without further ado, ta ta da da!!!!!  Here are some side by side before and after pictures.

The detailed breakdown….

Paint by Behr.  It’s the first time I’ve used paint with primer built in and I liked it.  I love the bright yellow and I definitely moved away form the green zone I was in.  Pillows and black throw blanket from TJ Max.  Black and white magazine holder from Michaels that I bought six months ago.  Oh, and check complete on the location because as you can see Divot can still look out the window!

037-2 This corner of the room is my favorite area and really says me.  My goal was to make it personal and I think I did.  The storage cubes were from Michaels bought several years ago.  I had a dozen of them and I took them apart (see before picture above) and created two separate areas for them.

Craft Room 021-1 I had an old bulletin board and when I couldn’t sleep Saturday night I created this look, which I’ll share in a post later this week.  Everything on this back  wall I either already had, it was given to me or I used my computer to print.  Here’s my previous post on the the chair makeover.  I am still looking for a plain black chair cushion.  A friend gave me the  had a green polka dot shade which I spray painted.  Da ua love my jar of buttons.  I do!!  The jar came filled with  peanut brittle and was a Christmas gift from a friend.  The little wood carved bird came from ACE for $1.50.

Craft Room 036-2

I repainted a mirror I already had, see here.  The 3 frames came  from the dollar store.  I framed scrapbook paper. fill.  The picture above the cubes is from TJ Max.  An old round black garbage container is holding all my cellophane wrap I use to make candy bouquets.  I also gave the dresser pulls a coat of Rust Olem Black Hammered spray.

Craft Room 046-1

I apologize for the glare on these  pictures.   My friend took these fabulous pictures of sunflowers and used my home printer to make copies.  I’ve had the frames stored in the closet for at least 10 years.  No laughing!Craft Room 008

Total cost at the end of the day including paint cost was approximately $140.00.  I’ll break it down in another post.  I feel pretty good at meeting my minimal cost rule.  Future purchases incluse  a better mattress and bedding for the fold out bed.

Over all I’m happy with it.  My hubby told me it was definitely a female room so I know I succeeded in what I started out to do.  Please let me know what you think.

Spare Room Project – Shelf + TJ Max

Happy Friday everyone!!  Yay!  I do love the weekends.

I’m still working on the spare room, aka craft/guest/reading/my room.  Hopefully it will be done by the time I go back to work on Monday.  After all, it’s Fall and that means let the decorating and yard cleanup begin.

I finished another project and did not spend any additional dollars to complete as I had everything on hand.  I had an old, dirty, but cute shelf sitting in the corner of the garage just waiting to be painted.  Once again, Rust Oleum to the rescue.  It was a simple fix and it will look great on one of the smaller corner walls.  And how my goodness, the white will pop so well against the yellow walls.

White Shelf  042

Here are a couple of pics, not the best, but wanted you to have a closer peek at some of the scrolled edges.  I think its so pretty.

043 047-1

I also am still contemplating what to do with the white dresser.  It’s not solid wood and I used it in my son’s nursery and he’s 20 now.  I’ve thought about painting, stenciling, using rub-ons, contact paper or wall art stickers.  It’s not in to bad of shape so I may keep as is until I can 100% decide in my head what I want to do.  In the interim I’ve spray painted the drawer pulls to a metal black.  Much better, don’t ya think?

052

Lastly, made a quick stop at TJ Max yesterday on the way home from work.  By the way, L.O.V.E. that store.  Spent very little money for 3 pillows, and a throw blanket.  I think there all pretty special and compliment the loveseat and walls.

037-2

Big heart for the pillow in the middle.  Every room needs something really girly.

048

One more thing about the pic above.  I used one of the features in piknick to get the white matte/black frame look.  I’m going to print out and if it looks good I won’t have to by mattes for the picture frames!

I also picked up a couple of more items while I was at TJ Max.  They fall into the “just have to have because” category.  I know I said I wasn’t  going to buy any items for the walls.  My goal was and stii is to use what I already have and/or create art for the walls but…..this picture was only $12.00 and I think it will be perfect.

050

I mentioned an additional 2 purchased items, didn’t I?  Here’s the really big splurge.  Fell in love with it and hey, the lid comes off so I can store stuff!

041

Hey, I think it’s your first glimpse at the yellow walls.  Pretty bright!  It makes me feel like sunshine.  So what do you think?

Spare Room Project – Wall Art / Picture Placement

Mornin!  I’m almost done completing my Spare Room Project, aka craft/guest/reading/my hangout.  I have one blank wall that I would really like to make pop with pictures that are meaningful to me (family, places I’ve been, special moments in time, things I love) and maybe a few created art projects created by me. I actually shared some ideas in a previous post earlier this week.

When it comes to placing all of this on a wall I very often need a visual.  I am always having to think and learn about scale.  Below are some different layouts I really like.  Once again, thank you Pinterest for giving me something to think about…

Love the black and white against the bold color and especially the outline of black.  OMG, do I need to do some additional painting?

love this corner wall, oooooo la la!!! The color is yummy with the black contrast

frames are different sizes, widths, colors, but it all blends nicely, doesn’t;t it?

@ nesting place

Same shape, variation in size and pattern, shades and depth of same color

Ready-made ceiling rosettes with spray paint. Inexpensive wall art for a guest bedroom? cute

What a great idea – could do something like this with ribbon…

Pops of bright color = the matting is outstanding!

Statement…

Hmmmm, me likey.  My yellow walls, my colors (yellow, turquoise, black, white), different shapes, a little bit random, just like me!  A mix of color, shapes, sizes but still goes together.  This could be the ticket!  But then again maybe not.

I think I need to do a layout on the floor before I start putting nails into my new beautiful yellow walls.  Stay tuned!

Spare Room Project – Chair Revamp

Hi all or as my son would say since he’s spent the past 2 years in Orlando, Hi y’all! 🙂  I’m happy to share another project is complete for my guest/craft/reading/my room project.

For a quick reminder, my hubby’s Tommy Bahama shirt became my inspiration.

Shirt on Door-1

A few weekends ago my neighbor gal was going to take a couple of old kitchen chairs to the Goodwill.  I said not only No but No No No!  I talked her in to the two of us spending a gal afternoon doing the DIY thing.  We primed, sanded and sprayed.  Rust Oleum, you are my hero!  My neighbor in crime painter her chair a moss green and I chose the aqua/turquoise color.

I still need to decide on a chair cushion but I gotta tell ya, it looks fab next to my white desk and bright yellow walls.

I’m getting excited to share the entire room, promise!  Soon, it will be soon.

Spare Room Project – Wall Accessories

I touched up the walls last night in the spare/guest/craft/my room but decided I would also paint the switch plates so waiting for those to dry.  For paint details, see  yesterdays post.

I’ve been contemplating what to hang on the walls.  I know whatever it is it needs to be personal to me and not some random piece. I am going through my picture stash for my favorites.  I also have garnered some ideas from Pinterest. That said, here are some of my thoughts.  It will take awhile to get it all done.  Oh and by the way, I really don’t know if I will incorporate all of this, but I really like all these ideas…

I love buttons.  Adorable, right?

The possibilities are endless when it comes to framing scrapbook paper.

Love, love, love this!

I know it’s not a wall item, but had to throw this great idea for a lampshade in ’cause it’s so dang cute.  I can just see it in the colors I’ve picked.

Another cute use for a frame.  Did I mention how long I’ve been picking up frames and how many are in my closet?

I love birds and I am totally, totally, totally in love with this dresser.  I have to think about this one.  I have a white dresser.  There’s got to be a stencil out there somewhere…..

So many ideas!  My brain hurts!  I will have to think about this in a bit.  What do you think?

Spare Room Project – Paint

Happy Monday everyone!  Hope you all had a great weekend.  Our Northwest weather definitely turned this past couple days.  We saw the first rain for awhile and the wind is causing many leaves to fall from the trees.  Yesterday was the perfect weekend day to stay inside and paint the guest/craft/my room/etc.

After much thought I decided to go with something bright, Behr’s Chilled Lemonade.  Yep, I’ll have sunshine even on a grey day! Here’s the paint chip.

Paint Chip

And here’s what it actually looks like.  I was worried it would be on the light side so I had them add 25 percent more color. I also, first time, purchased paint with the primer already built in.  It really went on the walls well.

Paint Can Open

No more boring walls!

Before Wall

I didn’t finish until last night so I’ll do a quick check for touch-ups tonight after work and then start putting the room back together.  Lot’s more projects to finish.

Spare Room Project – A Mirror

The spare room project is coming along.  So far, I’ve moved a loveseat with hide-a-bed and ottoman into the room and decided on a color palette, see here.

Reveal – I’m painting the walls some type of yellow this weekend.  In the interim I’m working on a mirror project and wanted to share with you.  I’ve had this mirror for at least 15 years and for the last 10, its hung in my office at wok.  When I changed jobs and offices a couple of months ago I brought it home and it’s been in the garage ever since.  Poor mirror, it needed some oomph and since I am putting a lot of the aqua/turquoise/blue-green color into the room, spray paint became my friend again.

Here are the before and after pics.  Forgive the glare and the dirty mirror….

Tile Art 008-1 Aqua Mirror 011-1

There isn’t really any white on the mirror.  That’s glare.  You may be wondering what those big globs are in the one mirror pane?  Well, I had this idea and now not sure if I like it but will keep for a bit of time and then make decision.

The globs are lady bug 3-D stickers.  Kind of hard to see, but in person the visual is much better.  I love lady bugs and since they bring good luck I thought I would add them.  Here’s a closer look…

Aqua Mirror 018-1

What do you think of the lady bugs or do you have any ideas ho to add some pizzazz to this mirror project?

Spare Room Project – Moving Furniture

As I shared in yesterdays post, I’m in the process of changing up my spare room into a craft/reading/my pad/guest room all on a shoestring budget.  The room has been a catch-all the last several years.  There has been an overstuffed chair and ottoman sitting in it that my son and I some how shoved through the small doorway when we purchased new family room furniture a couple of years ago.

Rm with Green Chair-1

There is also a deep blue-green/aqua/turquoise/that kind of color loveseat/hide-a-bed/ottoman sitting in the loft that we purchased many years ago.  My neighbor gal helped me and we swapped the locations of the chair and the love seat.  I’ll worry about the loft look later, but for right now I’m concentrating on the spare room, which I repeat, now has the love seat and ottoman  in it.  The furniture move itself has its own story.  Lets just say thank goodness for neighbors like Bob because we kinda got the furniture stuck in the bedroom doorway!  All’s well that ends well. 🙂

Couch-1

Yesterday I talked about color palette and I explained I am taking inspiration from my hubby’s Tommy Bahama shirt.

Ottamanband shirt-1

Pretty, isn’t it.  The loveseat/ottoman color works with the shirt well.  It’s hard to see, but the shirt has the aqua/turquoise/blue-green color, yellow, white,  some soft moss green and a bit of black.  Yep, this is going to be the room colors.  Exciting!!!!

I’ve already completed a couple of projects for the room and I’ll share those later this week.  I’m planning on painting this weekend.  Wall color revealed soon.  Can you guess?

Spare Room Project – Tommy Bahama Inspiration

Around five years ago the extra room in my house had a day bed and trundle.  I can’t even remember why I decided to sell it.  I know I wanted to do a change-up, but can’t remember to what.  Over the years I’ve wanted the room to be used as a craft room, guest room, my office, a reading room…..get the picture?  I haven’t been able to make up my mind so I’ve always made completing this project my last priority.  I wanted it black and white, all white, blue, green, tan and brown….get the picture?

I’m challenging myself to finally do something.  I’ve given  myself a set of rules I need to abide by.

  1. Use items already in my house;  Move, repurpose furniture, be creative.
  2. It has to provide bedding where at least one person could sleep.
  3. Must be functional.  I need to comfortably be able to craft and read.
  4. Divot needs to have a place to sit by the window and look outside.
  5. Get out of my green comfort zone.
  6. Spend minimal dollars.

Looking at the color wheel below, I’ve decided to focus on the Yellow to Blue-Green colors and shades of them.  For more information, see my post on color wheels here.

ColorWheel1 I arrived at these color choices through the process of washing and ironing.  Yep, you heard that right.  I was doing laundry and saw my hubby’s Tommy Bahama shirt and the rest is history.

Shirt on Door

I love the blend of yellow, white and aqua.  it might be hard to see, but there’s also some light stripes of a soft moss green and black also.  Lot’s of options!

I’ll be sharing with you over the next couple of weeks my transformation journey.

I’m curious, what inspires your color choices?
