A Merry Christmas + Around the House

I’ve been baking cookies today, the Prime Rib is ready for tomorrow and only a few presents left to wrap.  Christmas Eve is only hours away.  Sometimes I wish I still had a small child.  Their excitement is so contagious.  I still remember 15 years ago when we moved into our house just days before Christmas.  Our son was just 6 and truly afraid if we didn’t have the house totally decorated and lights up outside that Santa wouldn’t find him.  We’d been to an Aunt’s house for Christmas Eve and and just as we got home a small plane flew overhead.  You could see a red light and we convinced our son it was Rudolph’s nose.  He flew to his bed and fell fast asleep so Santa would stop.  It’s one of many memories I cherish.

May you all have a wonderful holiday with family and friends resting, laughing, reminiscing, just what ever you want to do that fulfills you.  I’ve not take the time yet to show you our home decorated for the holidays so if you have a minute please join me.  These are just a few that I’ve taken.  You can find many of the details in previous posts or in my Project Gallery.

Progressive Dinner + Tablescapes

Last weekend hubby and I had a great time.  Four houses, four meals and drinks and wonderful neighborhood friends.  I wish I would of taken pictures but I was having too much fun.

We started at Sharon’s with appetizers and a punch that really kicked the atmosphere into gear!  Next was our house and we had the salads.  We had Caprese salad and Caesar salad.  We also had a Bloody Mary bar complete with multiple flavors of mix and the extras’;  pickled onions, beans, asparagus, celery, and cubed cheese.  It was a hit! and really fun to do.  I did set a nice table and I did take a few pictures.

Centerpiece 1

We have a small dining table but we happily seated 7, a little bit of a squeeze but the Bloody Marys’ helped!  I did a black, white, gold and silver theme.  I used both silver and gold chargers, alternating them around the table and also alternated the silver-gray or gold paper napkins, making them opposite of the charger color.  Down the center of the table is a cream runner dressed up in gold glam.

I found the dishes at Home Goods on clearance.  Salad plates $2.00 each, dinner plates $3.00 each.  What a good deal, right?  And I love black and white.

Next stop was K & B’s for a fabulous lasagna, crusty French bread and red wine.  And then on to T & R’s for a wonderful cake, caviar and brandy.

What a wonderful night with friends!

It’s getting oh so close to Christmas.  Are you ready?

Livingroom Christmas Tree

I haven’t posted anything for a week.  Work (the day job) gets crazy busy this time of year because we shut down from Dec 22 – Jan 2.  It’s an awesome break to spend time with family.  Last time I wrote I promised pics of our livingroom tree so here ya go even though I’m only 5 days late, at least!  We did the tree in white lights and gold ornaments and added some eggplant color for contrast.

Wee Christmas Tree + Family Room Decor

I had plans to share my living room and family room décor and trees, but Pic Monkey is acting up and I was only able to edit some photos of the family room.  The others I’ll have to share on another day.

Our tree in the family room is just a small wee one and  sits on top of the all-important (according to the hubby) subwoofer.  This year I put the little faux tree in a basket and stuffed with colored tissue paper.  The ornaments are silver, clear and multiple colors of green.

Do you have all your decorations up now?

Blue Christmas Corner

I’ve had so much fun this year unpacking decorations and deciding where to put them.  Because, you see, this year is so much different.  Last year at this time I had just had surgery for a shattered wrist and had  a cast on my arm.  My sweet sis-in-law and niece decorated for me and I went with just a few decorations.  In fact, I didn’t even put up a tree, but instead filled a container with branches and ornaments.  This year we have our tree up and decorated and my branches  and vase moved to a corner of my entryway along with some other favorite items of mine.

I’m sharing with you today my little blue Christmas corner.

Full View

There’s lot’s going on here.  The vase itself has made quite the evolution and you can read all about it by going to my Project Gallery.  I’ve got an entire section dedicated to Christmas crafts.  Here’s a closer look.

My reindeer are the same as last year.  I didn’t change a thing after the spray paint treatment and I even kept the same ribbon around their necks.

The blue candle sticks are also an item making a second year appearance.  Last year they were in the living room.  I like them here in the blue corner.  Two of the three are placed near a clear glass Dollar Store vase.  I filled the vase with the same garland I used on the mantel this year, then stuffed a candle in it.

My new little crafty thing is this small vignette within the blue vignette and I think I’ll just save the simple details and additional pics for another post.

Pinecones 1

To the right of this is a treasure chest of ornaments found at Home Goods and Kohls.  It’s one of my favorite things, so glittery and inviting.  I added a fau pearl string of Christmas beads I had in my stash.  The tin is a curbside free find that I spray painted white last summer.

It doesn’t matter which way I enter the house, through the garage or the front door, I see this area first and I really like it.

There you have it, my little blue corner celebrating Christmas.

Light It Up–DIY A Tray of Candleholders

Happy Monday everyone.  Are you checking things off the  Christmas to-do list?  Mine is slowly getting smaller.  I was so glad I put most of the decorations up Thanksgiving weekend.  My husband had a bad fall and this past Friday he had surgery; 2 massive tears and detached tendons in his rotorcup.  It will be a slow recovery process but thankfully we can move forward.

I wanted to share with you today what I call a tray of light.

DIY 1 Candle Holders

All of the vases came from my craft cupboard by way of the Dollar Store.  I keep lot’s on hand.  You make recognize the gray with clear stripe candle and the two gold ones from a recent post I did.

For the remaining bunch, it happened like this.  As I said, I had all the vases as well as lots of scrapbook paper and stickers and I just started experimenting.

See the goblets on each end?  I made those by taking a Dollar Store vase and candle holder and adhering them together using glass glue.  Then I applied scrapbook stickers, sprayed each of the goblets with Rustoleum Frost spray, then pulled the stickers off.  Every vessel has a tea light that you can get 2 for a $1.00 at the Dollar Store and they last up to 10 hours.  Score!  The tray is one I found on the street curb a couple of months ago and I spray painted it.

Simple, fast, and it looks so pretty at night.

What have you been making lately?

Shadowbox Snowflake Wreath

My list of Christmas craft ideas is a mile along and I’m slowly getting them done and checking them off the list.  The good thing is I haven’t had to purchase too many supplies.  The bad thing is I keep checking our magazines, blogs and Pinterest and my idea list keeps growing!  Do you have that problem too?

Today I’m sharing…

DIY Snowflake Wreath Title

You’ll need just a few items:

  • a picture frame – your choice of style
  • snowflakes (I had a couple of  packages already from the Dollar Store
  • Glitter glue
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Hot glue gun and glue stick

I’ve mentioned before my neighbor is in the framing business and he sends lots of free frames my way.  This one is a shadowbox frame and it was originally gold.  I sprayed it white.  I went to my scrapbook paper stash and chose this blue piece because it matches my Christmas blue vignette (sharing that next week). Simply figure out how you want them to fit together and start gluing.  I used a combination of white iridescent and clear iridescent.   I added a bit of blue glitter glue to the centers.  For the shadowbox itself I adhered the scrapbook paper to the frame back with double sided scotch tape because I’m thinking I’ll want to use the frame again for something else.  I’m happy with the way it looks and it adds a little brightness and glam to the entry way.

Holiday Mantel 2012

Layla at the  The Letter Cottage is hosting a Holiday Mantel decorating link party and I’m popping over there to join the fun.  You should really take a peak or two.  I guarantee you will be shocked by all the creativity.  My mantel will never look like some of these because I have a large screen TV mounted to the wall above.  I admit, it did help when I painted the background black.

I do like to put a few things up to get us in the spirit of the holiday.

I forgot to mention that our front speakers and the the box in the middle, whatever it’s called, sit on the mantel also.  Anyhow, here’s what it looks like when you walk in.  I have a small tree and bookshelf on the right and a large built=in bookshelf on the left which I’ll share another time.  How about a closer look?

Goblet with Ornaments

Keeping it simple, keeping it cheap, the goblets are from the Dollar store and filled with ornaments also from the Dollar store.  I have 2 of the glass Christmas trees, they change colors when turned on.   I bought them many, many years ago at Rite Aid.

Holiday Craft–Signage

You’ve all seen the cute signs on the web where they say inspiring words and it looks really cool?  I thought I’d give it a try, but it seems like I end up spinning it my way just because it doesn’t turn out the way it’s supposed to.  Whew!  I certainly hope that makes sense because my brain is fried.  I just got off work, the day job, and this post should of gone out last night but I was too busy lazy!

When I updated my spare room in to my “woman cave” I hung this  little white shelf which later fell off the well.  I was left with multiple pieces of white board and I kept them because I knew someday I would need one.  Well, today’s the day!  Because you just have to believe!

Believe Sign

Believe sign close up

I first spray painted the board gold, then took Elmer’s glue and made the word Believe and left it to dry over night.

sign gold w glue

Once I spray painted it white, it all kind of blended and after I hung it the word could barely be seen.

See what I mean?  So I outlined the letters in green glitter glue and I like it much better.  Side note:  Any tips on how to clean brick?

Believe Sign

Isn’t it cute?  I love this little corner of the fireplace hearth now.  I’ve had that snowman for years.  It’s probably as old as my son and he’s 21.  I did a post  not to long ago on the pinecones and cinnamon basket.  Since then, I changed from the basket to this tin.  If you want to see what I did to paint the old bucket like this go here.

This is my first of many crafts I’ve got to get done.  I’ve got little projects going all over the house and my sweet hubby asked me if I could possibly keep them confined to one room.  Lol!

I’m joining a couple of linky parties today, Hi Sugarplum, Beth @ Home Stories A 2 ZBetween Naps on the Porch and Be Colorful.  Be sure to check these awesome sites for inspiring ideas.

I wanted to also get another  post out because Layla is having a mantel decorating party, but that just might not happen until tomorrow.  Check back to see or subscribe and you’ll get an e=mail notification of all my posts.  Click on the button at the top to become an “avid follower”.

Hope you’re having a wonderful day!

Vintage Ornament + Den Tree

When I opened the last storage bin of Christmas stuff this week  there were the stockings and pillows and lots of wadded up tissue paper.  I went through it carefully.    I came across an ornament of my mother-in-law who passed away 17 years ago.  I was surprised to find and actually wondered why now.   I keep most of her keepsakes, as well as my mom and dad’s, in memory boxes.

I’m getting sidetracked.  Sorry.  This is the ornament  I found …

Vintage Ornament

I love this.  It’s so fragile.  It’s inspired me to start looking at thrift shops more.  In the interim, I’ve decorated my little tree in our den with fakes.  There, I said it.  Fake vintage ornaments that really don’t even look like vintage ornaments, but I still like them.

My mother-in-law loved this time of year.  She’s doing a dance right now happy the ornament is hung.

So what about you?  Do you put up more than 1 tree? Big, little, theme? And by the way, Happy Friday!
